STDs
Commonly Cause Infertility

STDs - sexually transmitted diseases, previously known as VD or venereal diseases, are contagious infections. These infections enter the body through close personal contact, including vaginal or anal intercourse, oral sex or occasionally kissing.

STD symptoms clarifies the different types and symptoms of a STD

Our primary focus will remain on the effects on fertility.  Lets look at the five most common types in women:

  • chlamydia,
  • herpes,
  • gonorrhea,
  • syphilis and
  • genital warts.
  • Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)

Infertility consequence

For most individuals reading these pages, you will probably be in a long term monogamous relationship, if you are trying to conceive. Unfortunately a previous encounter of a sexual nature, may have left you with the results of infertility. Fertility test and treatments are available, so it is imperative that this is tested for by your primary health care doctor or fertility clinic.

STD awareness

For a woman who may have been raped, go immediately to an emergency room, or rape crisis center, as you can be tested and advised of treatment, in the event of exposure. Your future conception plans could be affected if action is not taken as soon as possible.

Your physician needs to be advised of any past history of multiple sex partners. During your infertility investigation, tests can be taken to detect any STDs which could affect your fertility. You and your partner will both require treatment. Infertility in females can be a direct consequences of a previous STD.

Some infections can be treated and completely cured. Others never leave the body, once contracted. This is one of the reasons why preventative measures and practicing safe sex is so important.

Rate of infections continues to rise!

Young people are the most susceptible age group to have exposure. The number of infections continues to rise. Today in the U.S., a woman is likely to be sexually active, without using a condom each and every time she has sex. In the event she has only one partner, that partner, could have multiple sex partners, thus continuing the rise of infections.

An estimate of 30 million people in the United States have herpes and millions more have other STDs.

Treatments vary from one type of disease to another. There are no vaccines for prevention and some drugs are effective in treating a STD. For severe cases, a combination of antibiotics may be required for effective treatment to bring the disease under control.

In conclusion, if you suspect you may have been exposed or suffered from any of these symptoms, resulting from a previous relationship, then testing for yourself and partner, is imperative as part of your infertility plan. STD's not only cause infertility in females, it can also cause infertility in males.

Effective STD treatment will assist in changing your fertility status.
