Ovarian Cysts
A Common Female Condition

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled growths that form on or near one of the two ovaries and are the result of an underlying hormonal imbalance.

Fortunately most of the time these cysts are harmless and do not interfere with fertility.

Ovarian cysts

The most common of cysts, they are follicles in the ovary that may stop developing before ovulation, forming fluid-filled cysts on the ovarian wall.

They may last a few weeks before disappearing on their own. In some instances, medical intervention may be required.

Pain, in the form of a dull ache may be experienced, painful periods, or even painful intercourse.

They may be diagnosed by a physician through a pelvic examination, or ultra sound.

Treatment can be with a progesterone injection, if medical intervention is required. Pain should dissipate and bleeding should occur within 5 to 10 days.

Corpus luteum cyst

This is a rare condition experienced when the corpus luteum continues to live beyond the normal 12 to 16 days - when no pregnancy has occurred.

A type of cyst, which delays a woman's period or makes her flow very light.

For woman who are monitoring their ovulation cycle and monitoring temperature patterns on an ovulation chart - the temperature will remain high in the third phase (luteal phase) of the cycle.

Mistakenly in some cases, due to a continued high temperature or delayed period, it is assumed that pregnancy may have occurred, but this is not so. Fortunately, the good news is that these cysts usually dissipate on their own, without medical treatment.

Dermoid cyst

This type of cyst may contain bits of hair, teeth and bone and most probably will need to be removed, if discovered through infertility investigations, or in the event of unexplained infertility.

Signs and symptoms of cysts

Most women do not have any signs at all. Cysts may be discovered during a routine pelvic examination. Symptoms can be confused with other menstrual disturbances, such as:

Most cysts will disappear without any treatment being applied. In some rare cases, intense pain, weakness, nausea and vomiting may occur, which should be treated immediately, by a physician.

Treatments for cysts

Treatments for infertility caused by this condition could include, fertility drugs and in more serious instances, surgery - called cystectomy.

Home remedies to try, to avoid the recurrence of these cysts, could include, reducing fat, dairy products and sugar and increasing your grain intake. Vitamin E benefits and supplements are also recommended.

While some types of cysts can be considered a symptom of infertility, there are treatments available for a full recovery, and thus increased fertility.

This may be through medical intervention, such as drug therapy or surgery such as cystectomy. The important point is that it is treatable in most instances and therefore will not affect fertility for any length of time.

Infertility in woman due to ovarian cysts is often a temporary condition.
